BMW and Mercedes are busy recalling vehicles for problems that, so far, have not caused any accidents or injuries.
BMW recently announced a recall of over 156,000 vehicles to correct a stalling problem that was first noticed in China. In 2012, BMW recalled a number of vehicles because the aluminum bolts that secure the housing for the variable camshaft timing adjustment unit can loosen over time and may break, causing stalling.
At that time, BMW stated that because of the low rate of problems in China, they were not going to recall vehicles in the United States. However, that has now changed. Vehicles being recalled are:
$1· 2010-2012 Series 1
$1· 2010-2012 Series 3
$1· 2010-2012 Gran Turismo and X3, X5, X6 and Z4
$1· 2011-2012 Series 5
$1· 2012 Series 6
Owners of these vehicles will receive a notice in May and U.S. dealers can then replace those bolts.
BMW is also issuing extended warranties for another 170,000 inline six-cylinder 2010-2012 vehicles not covered in the recall to address the problems should they arise. Those vehicles were built between 2009 and 2012. It should be mentioned that this is not an official recall but rather an action based on safety issues.
Meanwhile, Mercedes-Benz is calling back 253,000 vehicles produced from 2008-2011, including the C300, the C350, and the C63 to address a tail light issue. Again, this is a preventative measure for safety sake, and the owners will be receiving those notices soon.
