The Land Rover has always been known for its off-road prowess. If you want to go on safari over the savannahs of Africa, the Land Rover is the car for you. Heck, if you just want to off-road to your favorite lake in Topeka, the Land Rover is your first choice. But off-road capability is not all that you will find in the new Land Rover LR 4. You also get unmatched English luxury as an added bonus. If you want the ability to go anywhere and do it in style, then look no further than the Land Rover LR 4.
There is competition for this luxury SUV and it comes from the BMW x5, theL, Mercedes-Benz GL the Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Lexus GX 460. All are quality vehicles that can get you from Point A to Point B with little fuss. Still, the LR 4 is the choice for most off-roaders who want to sip wine while they tackle the elements of nature.
The LR 4 is powered by a more-than-capable 5.0-liter V8 that gives you 375 horsepower with a six-speed automatic transmission to a full-time four-wheel-drive system. It can do the 0-60 sprint in 7.5 seconds, a very good time for this class of vehicle, and EPA ratings are 12/17. It can also tow up to 7,700 pounds if properly equipped.
Safety is assured with antilock disc brakes, traction control, stability control with rollover mitigation technology, hill descent control, hill start assist, and more airbags than you could ever need. In stopping tests, the LR 4 came to a halt from 60-0 in 126 feet, about an average distance.
Standard features include 19-inch alloy wheels, foglights, heated exterior mirrors, climate control, keyless ignition/entry, rear sunroof, 11-speaker stereo with touchscreen and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Options include Climate Comfort package, heated windshield, leather upholstery and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, to name a few.
All of those things are huge pluses to be sure. We would be remiss if we did not mention the Land Rover’s reputation for questionable reliability and of course its horrendous gas mileage, plus it sways a bit on curves when driving the highway.
Land Rover makes no excuses for what it is. What it is quite frankly is a vehicle for the rich to play with. If you want to go where no roads will lead you, and you want to do it in style, then check out the Land Rover LR 4. You won’t be disappointed.
