If you are looking for a small luxury crossover SUV, the 2013 Acura RDX might be the car for you. We would love to tell you that it is outstanding in many categories, but that would not be truthful. What this vehicle is, in fact, is very good in many categories; not outstanding, but certainly much-improved over past offerings.
The RDX is powered by a new engine, and it is a huge improvement in power and fuel economy. This SUV is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that gives you 273 horsepower, and yet still gives you 20/28 mpg, which is quite good for this class of vehicle.
A six-speed automatic transmission is standard, and you have the choice between front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It can go from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds, which is quite quick for cars in this class. And what are your other choices in this class?
Competition is provided by the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, and the Volvo XC60. All of the competitors offer strong points, as does the Acura, and all are a little bit outstanding in several categories, as is the Acura. In other words, you have several good choices and not one that is fantastic.
Safety comes in the way of antilock brakes, stability and traction control, a wide array of airbags, and front head restraints. In a braking test, the RDX went from 60 to stop in 128 feet, about average for this class.
Standard equipment includes 18-inch wheels, heated mirrors, seven-speaker audio system, sunroof, and leather upholstery. You can step up in class and get a technology package that includes xenon headlights, foglights, power liftgate, a navigation system, and solar-sensing automatic climate control.
Overall we can say this about the new Acura RDX: it is a huge improvement. It is sportier, it is faster, it is more fuel efficient, and it is luxurious. What it isn’t is…..outstanding in any one area.
