Question: What does the Lexus RX 450 Hybrid have that the Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid and the Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid don’t have? The answer is two-fold: one, the RX 450H does not have as hefty a price tag as its two chief competitors and two, it does not have the poor fuel efficiency of those two leading competitors.

Now that’s a lot of negatives in that last sentence but the point is that the Lexus RX 450H costs less and has much better fuel efficiency and that is all good news for 2011/2012. Lexus has hit a homerun with the RX 450H. This luxury crossover SUV is just about everything you could ask for and its improved gas mileage is improved to the tune of 40% improvement and that’s saying a lot. Powered by a V6 3.5-liter engine and two electric motors (three if you opt for all-wheel drive) this Lexus is built for customer satisfaction and delivers admirably. Luxury features include a beautiful interior, all the latest gadgets and a great Mark Levinson sound system.

The RX 450H will hold five passengers comfortably and comes in several trims including the Premium package, Comfort package, Luxury package and Navigation package, all with their own set of options and standard equipment. What they all have in common is a very, very smooth ride and as quiet a ride as you will find this side of the Atlantic Ocean. The transmission is top-notch and the suspension above average although there lacks a certain “playful” attitude about the 450H. One last note and it certainly is not least: the RX 450H receives top safety scores in all of its tests, so mothers with little children will drive to the soccer field knowing that Lexus has taken care of her children during the ride.

At a little over $62,000 the Lexus RX 450H is not for everyone but what it is is a car that delivers on the promise to be more fuel efficient and to be a better-priced luxury vehicle than the main competition. And one last note always worth mentioning is that Lexus is of course the luxury line of Toyota and nobody makes engines and cars as well as Toyota with the possible exception of Honda. Drive this Lexus knowing that the car parts and built to last.
