After almost thirty years of car and truck sales in the United States, Suzuki Motor Corporation is calling it quits in the United States market.  Suzuki will stop sales of new automobiles in the United States, joining Saab and Isuzu as auto manufacturers who could not make it in the competitive U.S. market.

American Suzuki Motor will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, stating $346 million of debt.  They stated that they will retain their dealerships to help maintain existing vehicles in the United States.

Suzuki was never able to compete with Nissan and Toyota in the U.S. market and held the smallest share of the market, a rather remarkable turnaround from their great days of twenty years ago.  They had only sold 21,000 vehicles in the United States in 2012 to date.

This move allows Suzuki to concentrate on their motorcycle, motorboats, and ATV sales, which are still the hallmark of the company.  In addition, they will be able to concentrate on India, where they are currently the leading car manufacturer but where they face serious competition from Hyundai Motor Company.

Thus ends an interesting chapter in U.S. automotive history.  Suzuki at one time was a strong force thanks to their SUV’s and small trucks, but competition proved, in the end, to be too steep.  Suzuki has stated that they will honor all warranties on cars and trucks already sold in America.
