So who do you think is the number one automaker for 2012? If you guessed General Motors you would be wrong. Toyota is back on the top of the heap according to worldwide sales figures just announced.
Toyota claimed sales of 9.75 million, narrowly edging out General Motors which had 9.29 million. Coming in third was Volkswagen Group, which includes VW, Porsche, and Audi. They reported 9.09 million in sales.
General Motors dominated in China and the United States, the world’s two largest markets, but Toyota controlled its home country of Japan, where sales increased 35% from 2011 when they were drastically hurt by the tsunami and earthquake.
Toyota was number three in the United States behind General Motors and Ford.
Historically, General Motors led the world for seventy-seven years, through 2007, when it finished barely ahead of Toyota. In 2008, 2009, and 2010, Toyota led all automakers, and most likely would have led in 2011 if it were not for natural disasters that hit the nation of the Rising Sun.
The world economies will play a huge part in determining the overall leader in 2013. Europe’s economy is still hard hit by the global recession, so VW may take a hit in sales. Disputes between China and Japan could hurt Toyota over there, so it would not be a shock if General Motors came back to the top in 2013, especially considering a very strong lineup that they are featuring.
For now, though, bragging rights belong to Toyota and their strong lineup of automobiles and trucks. Some of their 2013 offering includes:
