It is time we turn our attention to the top of the line in coupes, and today we will look at the 2013 BMW M6. Take it from us, this is one heck of a car, combining power, better fuel-efficiency, and great handling.
What we have with this bad boy is a 4.4-liter V8 engine that produces 560 horsepower and can do the 0-60 trip in 4.1 seconds, which is basically blowing your socks off speed. It has an electronic governor on it that keeps the top speed at 155 mph, and if fuel efficiency is your thing, it offers 14/20, not bad for something this hungry for speed.
Standard is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that is smooth and responsive, and also standard are 20-inch wheels, a great stereo system, heated seats and enough room to make four passengers happy.
Competition will come from the Audi RS5, Cadillac CTS-V, Jaguar XKR-S, and the Mercedes-Benz, CL63 AMG, all thoroughbreds in their own right. The M6 competes with all of them and is actually priced in the middle range between them all.
The previous M6 had a 5.0-liter V10 that produced 560 horsepower and more torque, but it didn’t handle nearly as well as the 2013 model. The new model is wider, longer and heavier and surprisingly quicker out of the blocks, while providing better fuel economy. Anyway you look at it, the 2013 is a superior car.
Now for the bad news. The replacement parts for this car are expensive. There is no way to sugarcoat this news. That is why it is so important to keep your eyes peeled for special deals at auto parts stores. However, that does not mean you can’t find BMW parts for less money. If one is a discerning buyer, one will look to your local salvage yards. Sure, you won’t be seeing many of the M6’s showing up at local salvage yards in the near future, but if you do you would be well-advised to grab up replacement parts when they become available.
When we are talking about high-end German engineering, we are talking about replacement parts that are built to last. Even parts like a fuel pump or alternators cost a great deal, so if you find them at a salvage yard you can bet that they are in good shape; you can also bet that they are much less-expensive at a salvage yard.
The 2013 BMW M6 is a joy to drive and built to last; not a bad combination if you can afford one.
