One of the simplest maintenance jobs you can do on your car is changing the oil and oil filter, and yet so many people do not know how to do it.  There was a day, way back in the Middle Ages (1950’s and 1960’s) when it was a rite of passage for young boys to learn how to do this job along with many other simple engine jobs….now, not so much.

Still, with the emergence of so many people trying to do more car repair jobs at home to save money, now might be the time for a quick tutorial on how to change your oil and oil filter.  Shall we begin?  Your friends at All Import Auto Parts are ready to teach you.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED

Very simple tools are needed for this job.  You will need a large container for the old oil, a socket wrench, and oil filter wrench, funnel, new oil, new oil filter, a car jack, jack stands and rags.

HOW TO DO IT

Chances are you won’t even need to jack up the car or truck.  If you can access the oil pan underneath without jacking up then do so.  Simply park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the emergency brake.

Find the drain plug on the oil pan and loosen the drain plug.  Make sure you have your large container underneath the plug to catch the old oil as it drains out.  Be prepared because the old oil will rush out once you remove that plug.  Give it time and allow all of the old oil to drain out. Once it has, replace the drain plug.

Remove the oil filter using the oil filter wrench.  Some will remove without the need of a wrench, but it’s a good idea to have one handy just in case.

Replace with a new oil filter. Coat the filter gasket with a little oil on your finger and then tighten the new filter in place by hand.

Now add new oil to your car using a funnel.  Once you have put in the recommended amount of oil, put the filler cap back on and start up your car and let it warm up.  Check the oil level after a couple minutes and make sure you have the right amount in the car….if you do you are all done.  Total time elapsed:  half hour tops.

And that’s all there is to it.  Literally anyone can do this job.
