Gone is the Impreza name. The Impreza was a nice car but it did not signify high-performance in any stretch of the imagination. The WRX does! If you are looking for a sedan that is infinitely more than just a sedan, you really need to take the WRX around the block for a spin. Just make sure you buckle up tight.
There are actually two WRX to speak about, the WRX and the WRX STI. The WRX comes in base, Premium and Limited trim, while the STI is offered in base, Limited and Launch Editions trims. As always, the amount of extras that are offered is the difference in the trims. The basic WRX has 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, full power accessories, automatic climate control, sport front seats, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a split-folding rear seat, leather wrapped shift knob and steering wheel, rearview camera, great sound system and quite a few tech gadgets. That’s the base model, and the extras are just poured on as you move up in the trims.
If we had to name a competitor for the Subaru WRX it would probably be the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolutiuon, but in 2015 Volkswagen is coming out with the Golf R, and that will up the ante a bit for Subaru. There are also the Ford Focus ST and the VW GTI.
The WRX has a turbocharged 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder boxer engine good for 268 horsepower and it is teamed with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. This combination can take the WRX from0-60 in 5.4 seconds, a very impressive speed. Gas mileage is estimated at 24 mpg combined. The STI has a 2.5-liter turbo rated at 305 horsepower and also a six-speed manual transmission that does the 0-60 jaunt in 5.2 seconds.
Safety features include stability control, traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, active front head restraints and knee airbags for the driver. In braking tests the WRX stopped from 60-0 in 108 feet, a very, very short distance for a sport sedan, and it received the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
