Audi AG is based in Germany. Since 1964 Audi has been a wholly owned subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group.
August Horch founded the company in 1909 and produced the Audi Type A. August left Audi in 1920 but remained on the board of directors. In 1932 Audi merged with three other European Automakers to form Auto Union. They produced the Audi Front, the first European car to combine a six cylinder engine with front-wheel drive. The Audi logo, still used today, is four rings joined. Each ring represents one of the original companies that formed Auto Union.
Audi entered the United States in 1970 with the Audi 100. In 1974 the Audi 50 was produced. The Audi 50 was the first incarnation of the Golf/Polo concept, one that led to a hugely successful world car.
Audi, along with Volvo was the leader of the inline 5 cylinder, 2.1/2 2 L engine. This was a longer lasting alternative to the traditional 6 cylinder engines. In the 1980’s Audi used this engine in their rally cars.
In the early 1990’s, with the release of the Audi V8, Audi began to become a real competitor against luxury leaders Mercedes Benz and BMW. The most obvious bodyword difference was the new grille that was incorporated in the bonnet. By 1991, Audi had the 4 cylinder Audi 80, the 5 cylinder Audi 90 and Audi 100, the turbocharged Audi 200 and the Audi V8.
The 5 cylinder was dropped as a major engine but , a turbocharged 230 hp version remained. The Audi Coupé became the S2 and the Audi 100 became the S4. The S2 and S4 were the beginning of the mass-produced S series of performance cars.
Audi is coming after Toyota with a vengeance. Well, maybe not Audi so much as its parent company Volkswagen, but the point is the same: VW is not happy being Number Two in the world among car manufacturers, so the warning has been issued, the Toyota better be looking over its shoulder.
One of the fine German vehicles that seems to go unnoticed in the States is the Audi. While Mercedes-Benz and BMW got most of the attention and press, the Audi offers great craftsmanship and value for your dollar. Maybe it’s the names of the Audis that confuses people. We have the A1, A3, A4, A5,…
One hundred and three years. That’s how long Audi has been making automobiles, and they are still going strong. The German automaker actually started business in 1899, but it was not until 1910 that their first production car was made. They sold twenty. Today Audi has production facilities in twenty countries around the world, and…
If you are going to spend your hard-earned money on a large, luxury sedan, don’t you want to spend it on a company with a solid reputation? How about a company that has been in the automobile business since 1885? That’s right, 1885, and we are talking about the Audi A8, one of the best…
If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Those words beautifully reflect the thinking of the folks at Audi Motors regarding the 2012 A5. A few minor features were changed or shifted about but really, when you have a car like the A5, why mess with it? The A5, when it first came out, was like…
