Anyone with any experience visiting salvage yards is probably wondering what this “online salvage yard” title means. After all, a salvage yard is a place you roam around in, looking for used auto parts. A salvage yard is a place where you go to get a good, discounted price on used auto parts.  You drive up, you park your car, you go into the office, you tell the salesperson what you want, and they either pull it from their inventory, or they order it to be delivered from another salvage yard.  But an online junkyard?

But an online salvage yard? What is that?

Read on and find out, and if you have any questions, call us. We are All Import Auto Parts, a family owned business serving the Greater Fort Worth area for over thirty years. We know a thing or two about the salvage yard business.

The history of salvage yards

The first salvage yard made its appearance in the United States in the 1920’s, shortly after the introduction of mass-produced cars and trucks.  Their numbers increased dramatically in the 1930’s and 1940’s, so that post-World War 2, there were literally tens-of-thousands of salvage yards in the United States.

There were a place where those strapped for cash could find used car parts they could afford.  If they need a fuel pump for their old Ford, they went to the salvage yard, dug around in their lot, removed the fuel pump, and paid a discounted price for it.  It wasn’t a perfect solution; buying used never is; but it was an affordable solution for the millions of car-owners who could not afford to purchase brand-new auto parts.  There was also a limitation problem with most local salvage yards.  A salvage yard is only capable of having a certain amount of inventory on the lot.  It is physically impossible to carry every make and model and year of every vehicle ever made, so the chances of finding the part you wanted, back in the 50’s or 60’s, were slim.

The introduction of the internet and WWW

All things regarding salvage yards changed with the introduction of the internet in the late 1990’s.  Once companies put their inventories online, using data processing, and once that information was available to anyone with a computer, it became quite easy to find used Toyota parts or used BMW parts for any make or model you might need.

Apps were designed allowing salvage yard companies to search the web, search inventories of thousands of salvage yards, for a particular part, and have that part shipped immediately.  The Web, in truth, became one very large online salvage yard.
