Not so fast!

How long will new auto parts work?
We start off with a tough question, and a question which is really almost impossible to answer.
Engine parts typically will last upwards of 150,000 miles. Brake parts will make it about 70,000 miles. Timing belts – less than 100,000. Body parts can feasibly be good for a million miles if rust is avoided.
Having said all that, the life of a car part depends greatly upon the care you give your car parts. Keeping new oil circulating through your engine will increase the life of your engine parts.
Cost new vs cost used
Usually, and this is just an estimate, used car parts can be had at 40% or 50% discounts from the price of new parts. New brake pads may cost $100; used brake parts from salvage yards may only cost you $50. This makes the cost of used car pars very attractive during tough economic times, especially for people who must have transportation to get to and from a job site.
Savings relative to your financial situation
The question, then, is this: how tight is money for you at any given moment? Can you afford to continually pay for new auto parts, or is your budget limited? Purchasing new brakes can be expensive, especially if you do a lot of driving during the year. Would it make better financial sense to buy used brake parts?
